LA MAGA

PROJECTS & COLLABORATIONS

A Peruvian Musical Journey

Jackie “La Maga” and the talented Chilean guitarist Luis “El Gato” Lincheo form a unique duo that pays tribute to traditional Peruvian music. Originally from the south of Chile, Gato Lincheo is a professional musician who has made his home in Berlin, where he plays with Los Aborigen, a band dedicated to traditional Chilean music. However, Gato Lincheo’s musical influences extend far beyond his homeland. Having spent many years in Peru, particularly in Chincha and El Carmen, Lincheo developed a deep connection with Afro-Peruvian music. This region of Peru  is known as the birthplace of the landó, the festejo, and the iconic cajón (Peruvian box drum). Through his experiences playing with talented Afro-Peruvian musicians, Lincheo has cultivated a profound love for traditional Peruvian sounds, from the lively rhythms of Afro-Peruvian genres to the rich melodies of the Andean highlands.

A multi-instrumentalist, Gato Lincheo brings a wide array of musical skills to the project. In addition to his expertise on the guitar, he plays the charango, ukulele, traditional flutes, and zampoña (panpipes), all of which contribute to the rich, authentic sound of this musical venture. The collaboration between Jackie and Gato Lincheo began after they met at the Conexión Latina festival in Erfurt, an event organized by Jackie and La Maga. This meeting sparked a shared passion for Peruvian music, leading to the creation of a duo focused on interpreting and performing an exclusively Peruvian repertoire. Together, they explore the vibrant diversity of Peruvian music, performing vals criollo, landó, festejo, panalivio, and Andean music with authenticity and soul.

BALKONZERT

Concert on balconies

In order to alleviate the difficult time that migration means for many people, we launched the “Balconzert” integration project in the summer of 2016 in Jena, Germany to promote tolerance, respect, and equality between residents and foreigners. With music as a means, Balkonzert generates an intercultural exchange, in order to counteract prejudices and stereotypes towards migrants from all over the word.
Our goal is to spread diversity and tolerance through musical encounters from balconies in different neighborhoods and in this way gradually build a world that is more open, friendly, and tolerant of diversity.
Since the first festival in 2016, BalkonZert has featured over 60 musicians from many corners of the world – such as: Argentina, Albania, Brazil, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Peru, Republic of Moldova, Russia, Spain, Syria Tanzania, Venezuela, etc. – on the same balcony stage.
This project has been carried out with the migrant association Iberoamerica e.V. and has been financially supported over the years by: LAP (local association for democracy) in the cities of Jena and Erfurt, the office ‘Demokratisches Leben – Denk Bund’ and the municipality of Lobeda ‘Stadtteilbüro Lobeda’ .
