OUR JOURNEY

La MAGA was born in the mid-nineties in Lima with a mixture of styles between pop and psychedelic rock, its greatest influence was bands like Soda Stereo and Aterciopelados, although in its percussion it also felt some attachment to the rock of the seventies. The members of the band were: Juan López, Giorgio Canale, Ralph Medina and Jackie Vicente.

Jackie, a Lima native raised between the Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods, decided to move to Germany where she lives between the city of Jena in the Thüringen region and Berlin. From the beginning she decided to look for new musical paths, the only thing clear is that the band had to be Latin, quite a difficult task, since in Jena there were very few migrants at that time and much less Latinos and musicians. But luckily in all these years, there are many Latin and European musicians who have integrated La Maga, each one of them contributed and left something of their own culture and experience in the band and that is the great wealth of La MAGA.

NEW WAYS

Currently the members of the band are: Jackie on vocals and Ukulele, Andrés Romero on guitar, charango and mandolin, Jürgen Kauffmann on bass, Claudia Plöttner on accordion, flute and cuatro, Olaf Hesse on congas, Bass drum and cajon, and Carlos Prieto on timbales and cajón. Together they gradually outlined the new musical course of the band, which responds to an intimate interest of all to vindicate Latin American folklore as well as discover new European rhythms and find a parallel between them.

With the new band and some musical collaborations, an unprecedented repertoire was shaped, made up of songs with Afro-Peruvian rhythms, waltzes, chacareras, landós, cumbias, as well as Portuguese Fados and with lyrics and stories that talk a lot about immigration, homeland, roots, nostalgic and of course also about gastronomy, a very important topic for all Latin Americans.
